Virginia's Judicial System

Judicial Performance Evaluation (JPE) Program

About

The JPE program in Virginia was established pursuant to Virginia Code § 17.1-100. The purpose of Virginia’s JPE Program is twofold: providing a mechanism for judge self-improvement, and providing a source of information for the re-election of judges by the General Assembly.

Oversight of the program rests with the 11-member Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission, chaired by Justice Lawrence L. Koontz, Jr., of the Supreme Court of Virginia.

Operation of the program was suspended July 1, 2009.
