Virginia's Judicial System

2000-2001 Mediation Contracts

For the last six years, the Office of the Executive Secretary has awarded contracts to mediators to provide services to the Courts at no cost. This system of public-private partnerships has encouraged the use of mediation by judges, provided litigants access to mediation services and compensated mediators to some degree for their services. Over the last several years, the amount of money allocated to mediators was approximately $200,000. The 2000 General Assembly awarded OES a total of $500,000 for mediation contracts for fiscal year 2000-2001 and $700,000 for fiscal year 2001-2002.

This year, given that Senate Bill 127 provides funding for custody, visitation and support matters, an emphasis has been placed on General District Court mediation, Circuit Court mediation, and non-custody, visitation and support mediation in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Contracts have been entered into with 45 mediation providers. Please find a list of these contractors below. If you are interested in mentorship opportunities, the contractors are one source to contact. For a complete list of mentors, please review the Directory of Certified Mediators on the Internet at

This year, the contractors will be asked to enter data related to the mediations they conduct into a database accessible through the Internet. This will enable us to track things such as the length of mediations, the number of issues resolved in mediation, the types of cases referred to mediation, the frequency of participation of attorneys in mediation, the length of time from referral to a dispute resolution evaluation session and the mediation itself. This type of information will be instructive and useful for future requests for mediation funding from the General Assembly.
